Yggdrasil, the tree of life, is an evergreen ash tree which has three roots stretching to all parts of the world. Each root is connected to a well, and the one that goes to Asgard (the realm of the Gods) is watered by the Norns (female beings that decide a child’s fate upon birth) from the well of Urd. This is why Yggdrasil is always green. The tree houses a multitude of animals; evil snakes who gnaw the roots, four deer that eat shoots and leaves at the top of the tree, an all-knowing eagle among the branches, and a foul-mouthed squirrel who runs up and down the stem, spreading gossip and profanities.
